SUMMARY:Always Encrypted for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Session Abstract: \nOne of the biggest challenges to successful implementation of data encryption has been the back and forth between the application and the database.  You have to overcome the obstacle of the application decrypting the data it needs.  Microsoft tried to simplify this process when it introduced Always Encrypted (AE) into SQL Server 2016 and Azure SQL Database.  In this demo intense session\, you will learn about what Always Encrypted is\, how it works\, and the implications for your environment. By the end you will know how to now easily encrypt columns of data and just as importantly how to unencrypt. You will also learn about the current limitations of the feature and what your options are to work around them. \n \nSpeaker Bio: \nMonica lives in Virginia and is a Microsoft MVP for Data Platform. She has over 15 years of experience working with a wide variety of database platforms with a focus on SQL Server. She is a frequent speaker at IT industry conferences on topics including performance tuning and configuration management. She is the Leader of the Hampton Roads SQL Server User Group and a Mid‐Atlantic PASS Regional Mentor. She is passionate about SQL Server and the SQL Server community\, doing anything she can to give back. Monica can always be found on Twitter (@sqlespresso) handing out helpful tips.

SUMMARY:Transactional JavaScript Stored Procedures in Cosmos DB with Kevin Hazzard
DESCRIPTION:Our August 2018 meeting was a hit. Blaize delivered an excellent presentation on Cosmos DB. My only regret was that we couldn’t have another hour of his time and several of you have contacted me and said the same. For September\, I’ve decided to continue the theme and bring a related topic that’s near and dear to my heart: Cosmos DB stored procedures written in JavaScript that are implicitly transactional. As I tell my peers all the time: JavaScript is perhaps the worst programming language ever created and one of the very best. The terrible\, hot mess that is JavaScript in the web browser isn’t the same JavaScript we know and love in Node.js\, for example. In Node\, the JavaScript experience is somewhat bounded and guided by conventions and excellent\, stable server-side libraries. That makes the programming language rather pleasant to work with. The same is true of Cosmos DB stored procedures. JavaScript written in Cosmos DB is restricted and guided by some core principles that make it elegant. In this code-focused session\, we’ll talk about those principles and the coding practices you’ll want to adopt to be productive in this environment. Even if you aren’t using Cosmos DB yet\, I believe you’ll get a lot out of the discussion. And I promise to bring you all a non-Cosmos DB talk in October. 😉

SUMMARY:Richmond Sharepoint User Group Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Modernizing Workflows in the Era of OnPrem to Hybrid to Cloud Focus \nIn a not too distant past most organizations only had to contend with SharePoint Designer [aka SPD -SharePoint destroyer] to create workflows\, and that graduated from procedural top down sequential tasks to State Machine with loops and App Identity contexts… a good maturity level over the years.  Then came Office 365 and SharePoint Online (SPO) and then we had to contend with Microsoft Flow\, we also had to figure out how to work in an environment that was Hybrid or ‘lift and shift’ into the Cloud.  This session is all about the strategies you can undertake to evaluate your existing workflows\, determine a portability or migration effort\, and what you should consider as you build net new processes.  As Microsoft encourages you to move more of your business to the Cloud and embrace Modern Sites\, SPD is being de-emphasized and as such you will need a plan\, this session is all about the plan & some execution. \n  \nSpeaker: Fabian Williams \nFabian Williams is a Microsoft Office Server & Services\, Microsoft Visual Studio & Development Technologies MVP\, Xamarin MVP\, and a Microsoft Solutions Architect/Azure Technical Evangelist. His work with the SharePoint product line dates back to the 2003 release. Fabian holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Information System “Magna-Cum-Laude” from Strayer University\, Washington D.C. and his Masters in Computer Information Technology studies at the Johns Hopkins University Carey School for Business in Columbia\, Maryland. He holds the following Microsoft Certifications MCSE\, MCSD and MCDBA. You may find him on Twitter at the @fabianwilliams handle and his blog is www.fabiangwilliams.com.
